LANAP®, or Laser Assisted Regeneration, is an advanced and non-invasive alternative to conventional gum surgery. This laser treatment can effectively address the signs of gum disease with minimal discomfort, reduced recovery time, and less bleeding than the traditional scalpel method. Using a handheld device, Dr. Ryan Tracy can target and eliminate infected tissue, and encourage new tissue growth at the site of periodontal pockets. At our Clinton, MS, dental practice, our team follows a patient-centric philosophy. After evaluating your needs, goals, and preferences, we can design a fully personalized treatment plan.
LANAP Technology: How It Works
One of the most significant advances in modern dentistry, the LANAP protocol has been scientifically proven to promote new tissue growth and encourage gum tissue reattachment. Using distinct pulses, this tool can discriminate between healthy and compromised tissue. It can then precisely target the source of inflammation, leaving healthy gum tissue intact. LANAP treatment reduces pocket depths around the teeth, helping to preserve the structure of your smile.
The Treatment Process
Before treatment, we can thoroughly evaluate your teeth, gums, and jawbone. We may request x-rays or other advanced images for a more comprehensive view of your smile. If we decide to move forward, we can review your treatment timeline and the steps involved. Typically, we complete this procedure in two office visits.
During treatment, we can administer local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Dr. Tracy can then apply the dental laser to the selected periodontal pockets. After eliminating infected tissue, he can remove any plaque and tartar from below the gum line, before reapplying the laser to complete treatment.
After your procedure, you should maintain good oral hygiene, but you should refrain from brushing or flossing the treatment area as directed. You should also avoid hard, spicy, or excessively hot foods for the first three days after surgery. It is common to experience:
- Mild Sensitivity
- Slight tenderness or temperature sensitivity is perfectly normal, and should not be cause for concern.
- Slight Swelling
- The gums may be puffy following treatment, but this should subside within a few days.
- Minimal Bleeding
- LANAP treatment can result in slight bleeding. However, this should be much less extensive than that associated with traditional surgery.
- Color Changes in Gum Tissue
- The appearance of your gum tissue is likely to change following treatment. This is a normal byproduct of laser therapy and is not permanent.
To help ensure a smooth recovery, we can review detailed at-home care instructions and take the time to answer any questions or address concerns. If you experience any prolonged discomfort or excessive bleeding, please contact our office, as this may be a sign of infection.
LANAP vs. Traditional Gum Surgery
In years past, the only way to properly address periodontal disease was through gum surgery. This process involved incisions, sutures, and sometimes, tissue grafts. It also demanded a longer recovery time and often resulted in more prolonged discomfort. However, we now have the power to address certain cases of gum disease using LANAP, which we recommend for its reliability and effectiveness.
This laser treatment can effectively address the signs of gum disease with minimal discomfort, reduced recovery time, and less bleeding than the traditional scalpel method.
The Benefits of LANAP
Oftentimes, patients who are diagnosed with gum disease fear the prospect of traditional surgery and avoid the vital care they need. However, patients with dental anxiety can feel at ease with LANAP treatment. This non-invasive procedure provides patients with:
- A faster recovery time
- Less pain and discomfort
- Less sensitivity
- Less bleeding
- Reduced gum loss
- Reduced chance of postoperative infection
- Better aesthetic results than traditional gum surgery
This laser is also proven to promote tissue regeneration, improving your overall oral health.
